Demo 2: Bed of Nails

  1. In this demo, a balloon and two beds of nails were used, one having about 100 nails, and another with only 4 nails.
    The nails seemed rather thin, and the balloon was moderately inflated. The rocks also were relatively flat, and the mallet was relatively small. The wood that pressed down on the balloon seemed heavy and capable of popping the balloon on its own.
    I believe that the balloon didn't pop on the bed of 100 nails because the whole area is being stressed by the nails, as opposed to four, spread out areas.

  2. the materials you would need fror this lab would be 2 differet beds of nails (one with multiple nails and one with very few nails), 1-2 balloons, a couple rocks and a malot. while making observations i knew that the balloon wouldnt pop when placed on the nail bed of 100 nails and that the balloon would pop apon contact with the nail bed with only 4 nails. this is because the pressure placed on the balloon was spread out over the balloons surface more evenly preventing the balloon from popping but when the balloon was placed on the bed of 4 nails the balloon would pop because the pressure would be concentrated on each of the points and the pressure placed on the balloon would be in specific points causing the balloon to pop.

  3. In this demonstration, the materials that were used were 2 different beds of nails (one with 4 nails and one with 100), 2 rocks, a mallet, and a balloon.
    When the balloon was placed on the bed of 100 nails and hit, it did not pop. When the balloon was placed on the bed of 4 nails, it popped before the rocks were even added.
    I think that the bed of nails with 100 did not pop the balloon because it had an even distribution of the nails, and less pressure was added to the balloon. With the bed of 4 nails the points were not evenly distributed and the points were only on the corners. This made the balloon have unequal amount of weight on each parts of the bed of nails.

  4. In this demonstration, the materials that were used were two different beds of nails. One had 4 nails and one had 100. There were also two rocks,a mallet,and a balloon.

    The reason the balloon did not pop while on the 100 nails was because the pressure of being pushed down was able to spread apart among the surface of 100 nails. Even when the rock weights were on top of it, and it was being slammed by a hammer, the pressure still spread among the bed. While with the 4 nails the pressure was centered on 4 nails on opposite sides of the bed which did not allow the pressure to be spread and in result the balloon popped.

  5. The materials for this lab were two different beds of nails, one with 100 nails and the other with 4, two rocks, a mallet, and one balloon. When the balloon was placed on the bed of 100 nails, weighed down with two rocks, and hit with a mallet, it did not pop. This is because the weight is distributed evenly causing the balloon to stay inflated. When the balloon was placed on the bed of four nails, the mallet didnt even need to be used because it popped right away. The unequal weight distribution was the cause of the popping of thw balloon.

    1. I think that the weight distribution was equal in both cases. In other words, the weight was divided equally among the available nails.

  6. MATERIALS: A balloon, two beds of nails (one with 100 nails, the other with 4 nails), two rocks, and a mallet.

    OBSERVATIONS: First, Ms. Wenk put the balloon on the bed of 100 nails and put two rocks on top, and then hit it with a hammer. The balloon did not pop. Then, she put the balloon on the bed of 4 nails. Before she could even put the rocks on top, the balloon popped.

    EXPLANATION: The balloon did not pop on the first bed of nails because the weight of the balloon, rocks, and the mallet and it's force was all equally distributed throughout all 100 nails. When the weight of the balloon was placed on the bed of 4 nails, it popped immediately because it's weight was not evenly distributed, causing the popping of the balloon.

  7. In this experiment a balloon, 2 beds of nails, one with 100 nails and one with 4, a mallet, a wooden press and 2 rocks were used. When Ms. Wenk put the balloon on the bed of 100 nails placed the wooden press, rocks and hit it with a mallet the balloon did not pop. However, when she used the bed of 4 nails the balloon popped after only using the wooden press. This is because for the 100 nail bed the pressure is spread out over 100 points on the baloon as apposed to only 4, since there were more points of pressure the weight of the rocks, wooden press, and mallet hitting the wood was more evenly distributed over the entire balloon allowing it to not pop.

    Observations: Ms. Wenk put a balloon on a nail bed with 100 nails, put two rocks on it, hit with a mallet, and the balloon didn't pop. However when Ms. Wenk put the balloon on a nail bed with four nails on it, it popped instantly.

    Explanation: When the balloon is placed on the nail bed with 100 nails, the pressure is evenly distributed. There are more points of pressure on the balloon as opposed to the nail bed with four nails on it. When the balloon is put on the nail bed with four nails, there are four direct pressure points on the balloon, which easily pierce the balloon and pop it.

  9. This demonstration included a bed of 100 nails, and another of four. A balloon was placed on these nails, and then pressure was applied. On the bed of 100 nails, after rocks were placed above the balloon and were then hammered down, the balloon did not pop. This was aided by evenly distributed pressure across the balloon. On the bed of four nails, no pressure had to be applied before the balloon popped. The four points of pressure on the balloon pierced through the thin material of the balloon because the weight was not distributed evenly.

  10. The materials used in this experiment were 2 beds of nails, one with 100 nails and the other with 4 nails, a balloon, a mallet and rocks. When the balloon was put on top of the bed of nails with a hundred nails, the balloon didn't pop even with the extra weight of the rocks and the mallet because each nail exerted an equal amount of pressure and since the pressure was applied equally all over the balloon it didn't pop. However, when the balloon was placed on the bed of nails with only 4 nails, it popped easily because equal amounts of pressure were not being applied all over the balloon. The 4 nails were the only place where the balloon was feeling the pressure and therefore it couldn't withstand the pressure so it just popped.

    observations/explaination: Ms. Wenk first took the balloon and placed it in the bed of 100 nails. Even with the extra weight from the rock and the mallet, the balloon did not pop. Possibly, the fact that the pressure was equally spread throughout the nailbed and on the balloon, is why the balloon did not pop. However, when placing the balloon on the bed of nails with 4 nails, the balloon popped right away without even needing to use the mallet. This is because the pressure was not equally spread throughtout the entire balloon and there were only four pressure points.

  12. In this demonstration there are two different beds of nails, one that has about a hundred and another that has only four nails. First, you put the balloon on the bed of nails that has about a hundred and apply pressure to the top of the balloon until it pops. Then, you take the bed of nails with only four nails and put a balloon on top of that and apply pressure. Once finished with both tests, you will notice that the balloon took more pressure on the bed of a hundred nails rather, than the bed of only four nails. The balloon popped easier on the bed of four nails because equal amounts of pressure werent applied unlike the bed of a hundred nails, where it was.

  13. The materials in this experiment used were 2 beds of nails; one with 4 nails, and one with 100 nails, a mallet, a balloon, and two rocks. I observed that when the balloon was put on 100 nails, with a lot of added pressure, it didn't pop. But when the balloon was put on the bed of 4 nails, it popped right away. This happened because pressure=force/area. So when there was little force on a big area the pressure was not as great, which is why the balloon didn't pop on the bed of 100 nails.

  14. MATERIALS: 2 mini bed of nails(one with 100 nails and one with 4 nails), a balloon, 2 rocks, a mallet, and a wooden contraption used to put pressure on the balloon to hold it in place.

    OBSERVATIONS: When the balloon was placed on the bed of 100 nails with a wooden top and rocks on top and then hit with a mallet, the balloon didn't pop. On the other hand when it was placed on the bed of 4 nails with the wooden top gently placed on it, it popped as soon as Ms. Wenk let go of it.

    EXPLANATION: The reason the balloon didn't pop on the bed with 100 nails is because the force on the balloon was less than the area it was sitting on. Since the force was distributed evenly on top of the 100 nails, the balloon was able to stay inflated. But for the bed of 4 nails, the force was greater than the area(uneven distribution of force) which caused the balloon to immediately pop.

  15. The materials for this lab were two different beds of nails, one with 100 nails and the other with 4, two rocks, a mallet, and one balloon. When the ballon was placed on the bed which had 100 nails, the ballon could withstand a greater amount of pressure, than on the bed of only 4 nails. When placed on the bed of 4 nails, the ballon popped more easily. The reason why the ballon could maintain the air inside without popping over the bed of 100 nails was because the pressure was being distributed over the nails more efficiently than the bed of 4. When considering this phenomenon, one can deduce that with less nails, the amount of pressure is going to be greater. In this case, the amount of nails where the ballon popped was significantly less, showing how equal division of pressure is why the ballon did not pop with more nails on the bed.

  16. in this video theere was a balloon, two sets of nails one with 100 nails the other with 4, a malet and a rock. in the video she put a balloon in between a bed of nails and a piece of wood. she then put a rock on top of that piece of wood and then hit it with a malet and it didnt pop. then she replace the bed of nail with the one with only 4 nails on it place the balloon on it then lowered the piece of wood and it poped. this happened beacuse when the balloon was placed on the bed of 100 nails the pressure was focused in many different spots and when it was place on the bed of nails with 4 nails it poped because the 4 pionts were focused in only 4 spots instead of all over the balloon.
